Blogger Who Retired With $3 Million Shares 3 Things That Have Brought Him More Happiness Than Money
Happiness is more than just having money.
Sam Dogen, blogger of Financial Samurai, achieved his first $1 million at age 30.
Now aged 45 and retired with more than $3million, he shares that it was not the wealth that made him happy.
Instead, there are 3 things (not related to money) that have brought him more happiness than money.
1. Do more of what you love, do less of what you don’t
Although I was scared to leave behind my secure banking job, I took a leap of faith to do what I love: Work on Financial Samurai, the personal finance blog I started as a hobby in 2009.
Each morning felt like Christmas; I’d wake up eager and excited to read everyone’s comments.
Feeling excited to go to work in the morning is everyone’s dream. You know you’ve made it when you get out of bed feeling pumped up on a Monday morning.
Before you quit your 9 to 5, here are some questions to ask yourself:
What are your hobbies?
What are you passionate about?
Can you get paid for it?
The last question is the most important.
If you can’t monetise doing what you love, you’ll be worrying about where your next meal is going to come from. That’s the last place you want to be at.
2. Mentor others
If you really want to feel rich. Be a mentor. Share your wisdom. Help people achieve their potential.
Giving your time is more rewarding than only giving your money.
Start by learning from others. Share what you’ve learned with others, either in person or online.
You do not need to be the best or an expert to mentor others. If you’re at Level 3 proficiency, mentor others who are at Level 1.
A common mistake that many people make is that they try to know everything before teaching others.
Guess what?
The day will never come because you’ll never know everything. The day you think you know everything is when you know nothing.
3. Try new and scary things
Even though it was scary to not have a steady job at 34, it was thrilling to see if I could survive without a steady paycheck. I felt like a college graduate again, ready to face the world and reinvent myself.
When I first started writing online, it felt scary as hell. “Will anyone read whatever I have to say?”
Posting on social media feels scary. “What will people think of me?” “Will other people judge me?”
Doing something for the first time always feels scary.
Doing things that scare you that allows you to grow. It pushes you out of the comfort zone you’ve been residing in for years.
