This article was inspired by the folks at The Simple Sum, who did an excellent graphic on this.
I thought I’d give my take and expand on these “sins”.
Pride
Placing price over our survival needs is the best way to go broke (and hungry).
If you’re unemployed, take any job offer that comes your way, even if the salary isn’t to your expectations.
Don’t be choosy.
There’s no rule that says you can’t change from that job to another. It’s far easier to look for a job while in employment than out of it.
Greed
Just cause an item is on sale, doesn’t mean you have to get it.
What’s the point of getting something that you don’t need, just because it’s cheap?
Do you really need that second vacuum cleaner or washing machine?
Lust
Think of the Mcdonalds or Hello Kittys that you spent hours queueing up for.
Or the Gundam that you flew to Japan to purchase.
It’s okay to have these collections as a hobby, just don’t go overboard.
Envy
The perfect example: The long snaking queue to get your hands on the latest iPhone.
You don’t need to change your phone every year (even if you can afford to)
I’m one who uses my phone till it’s totally non-functional before changing. I used my previous phone for 5 years before upgrading.
Gluttony
Hands up, guilty as charged.
My love for food just can’t be satiated.
While it’s good to enjoy our delicacies, it’s also important to do so in moderation.
After all, health is wealth.
Wrath
Taking vacations is fine, provided you’re not borrowing money to fund it.
When purchasing a big ticket item, you need to be able to fully pay for it upfront.
If you can’t, don’t buy it.
Sloth
Taking Grab and taxis everywhere is a prime example of being a sloth.
Sure, there are times where this is necessary.
But if you’re not in a rush for time, perhaps consider public transport?
